OUR ADVENTURE TRAVEL BLOG MASCOT
On his way to Everest Base Camp. Nepal, 2014.
It goes without saying that our adventure travel blog mascot Mini G attracts a fair bit of attention wherever he goes. He’s been with us for more than two years now – dangling off our backpack and appearing in photos from all corners of the globe – and always sparks intriguing from our tour guides and fellow travelers. But why did we choose a miniature toy giraffe to be our travel companion? Well, that’s a whole story in itself….

Shortly after Charlene and I met, we planned our first overseas trip together in 2012. We had already established that traveling was a shared passion we wanted to pursue as a couple, but at this stage we had no idea how it was going to transform our lives.
We ended up flying to Africa to spend a week on a safari through the magnificent landscapes of Kenya and a week exploring the wine country and wild coastlines around Stellenbosch and Cape Town, South Africa. While we loved both countries, the wildlife spotting in Kenya, together with our cultural experience with the Maasai people, left a lasting impact on us.

Fast forward a year later in the Fall of 2013 and I was in the airport at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico after a destination wedding there. Every time I travel away for work without Charlene, I try and bring her back something small, and on this occasion a tiny little soft toy giraffe caught my eye. The giraffe had come to symbolize something special in our relationship and it seemed only fitting that this little guy (soon to be named “Mini G”) would be a part of it.
Soon after we returned to the States it was our one-year anniversary. In addition to buying Charlene some glamorous Christian Louboutin heels, I wanted to get her a cute stuffed toy and stumbled upon this three foot tall giraffe. He somehow perfectly encapsulated our travel experience over the last few months and came to be known as “Louie G” (in reference to the heels). Little did we know that this cuddly toy was going to end up such an important part of our family!

The first trip Mini G went on was to Morocco, and since that day he has flown all across the world with us. From Machu Picchu to Everest Base Camp, India to Patagonia – Mini G has tagged along for the adventure, always drawing a smile or a laugh from those around us.
Since we launched “Only A Day Away”, Mini G has not only become our travel mascot, but also stands pride of place in our logo. Who knew a toy giraffe could come to mean so much and embody the heart and soul of our travel adventures!
